Housing heroine wins national honour
31 January 2006
A caring Otley sheltered housing manager has scooped a national award for making her residents feel special. Pauline Hanson who works at Bupa’s Chevin Court was named house manager of the year in the UK awards run by ERoSH, the national consortium for sheltered and retirement housing.
Pauline has been manager at Chevin Court in Otley since it opened 15 years ago. She has built a strong sense of community among the 41 residents who live independently in their own homes at the development, which is run by Bupa’s Goldsborough Estates.
One Chevin Court resident Raymond Faulkner said: “Pauline is an outstanding person. Nothing is too much trouble for her and she very quickly makes people feel at home.”
All three finalists who were up for the award came from Bupa’s Goldsborough Estates. The other house managers were Rosemary Sheppeard from Bowland Court, Clitheroe, and Irene Cordingley from Delamere Lodge in Hazel Grove, Stockport.
Every Monday morning Pauline holds a coffee morning for residents. She encourages people to take part in fundraising for two local hospices. Residents are often involved in baking cakes and make greetings cards to sell locally.
“We’re all very close. Bringing residents together and involving them in the life of Chevin Court has helped create a happy environment. Within ten minutes of hearing I had won the award, residents were organising a celebration party,” said Pauline.
Pauline wins a glass engraved trophy and £500 to spend at Chevin Court. Goldsborough Estates operations director, Simon Crewe, added: “The fact that each of the finalists for this award came from Goldsborough Estates is a reflection of the quality of the people we employ and the training we provide. We are honoured to have people like Pauline working for us.”
