Bupa care homes lead the way in pioneering jobs partnership with government
30 June 2008
Bupa Care Homes has just signed a pioneering agreement with the Government to help thousands of long-term unemployed people to get back into work.
Julia Hurst, human resources director of Bupa Care Services and Stephen Timms, Minister for Employment, officially signed a Local Employment Partnership (LEP) on Monday 30 June at Bupa’s Copper Hill Residential and Nursing Home, in Leeds.
LEPs are a new collaboration between the Government’s Jobcentre Plus and businesses to help people on benefits to find new jobs. The two-week training course on ‘pre-employment’ helps them with on-the-job training, supervised work trials and guarantees an interview on completion of the course.
Julia Hurst said: "Bupa is pleased to be part of this initiative. Our care homes offer a variety of careers that are both challenging and extremely rewarding. Finding the right, committed people to recruit is vital to helping us provide the highest quality care to our residents.
“Our 303 care homes across the UK will be working with their local Jobcentre Plus to recruit the right staff for our job opportunities. We have already seen just how successful this can be in finding great people who might not otherwise have considered a career in care.”
Employment Minister, Stephen Timms MP, added: “It was good to hear how in Leeds both Bupa and their new employees have benefited from closer working with Jobcentre Plus, and I’m pleased that Bupa is now committed to replicating this throughout its network of care homes. Many more long-term unemployed people, both in Leeds and around the country, will be helped into work as a result.
“Increasing numbers of our customers, particularly lone parents, want to return to work, and employers who sign up to LEPs are helping them achieve this.
“The agreements work well for everyone involved: the employer gets suitable candidates for their vacancies and the Jobcentre Plus customer gets at least the chance of an interview.”
Rohina and Salma Begum, two sisters from Beeston in Leeds, recently got jobs as care assistants at Copper Hill care home and have high praise for the partnership.
“We had great support from Bupa and the team at Jobcentre Plus,” said Salma. “They gave practical advice and skills on the qualifications needed to work in a care home, as well as mandatory training in areas such as health and safety.”
Copper Hill is the second Bupa care home in Leeds to sign up to the partnership. West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home in Wakefield joined the scheme in May this year.
