Theatre and ward expansion works begin at Bupa Hospital Washington
29 June 2007
A ceremonial turf cutting event marked the official start of construction work on the site of the new theatre block and 12-room ward being built at Bupa Hospital Washington.
Roma Holland, matron and head of clinical services for Bupa Hospital Washington and Martin Rennison, Bupa commissioning manager were joined by David Smailes, construction company Bluestone's area manager for Tyne Tees and Ian Fleming, Bluestone's project manager, to officially launch the start of building work. The extension will add capacity to the existing hospital to meet the growing demand for Bupa's fast, high-quality services to treat private and NHS patients.
Bupa Hospitals recently signed a contract with the Department of Health to provide a range of NHS services to people in the North East of England as part of its Independent Sector Treatment Centres programme.
General manager at Bupa Hospital Washington, John O'Brien, said: "Being awarded the NHS contract is an opportunity for Bupa to expand its high-quality treatment and excellent hospital care to more people in the North East. Bupa's commitment to putting patients first will be extended to NHS-referred patients and the improved hospital facilities will benefit everyone visiting, staying and working with us."
Once work is complete, the hospital will be equipped to treat thousands more patients a year for procedures including orthopaedics, general surgery, spinal surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery and plastic surgery. Bluestone, the building project contractor, anticipates that the extension work will be complete in early summer 2008.
David Smailes, Bluestone's manager for the Tyne Tees area, said: "As a major provider of flexible multi-purpose buildings for hospitals and the healthcare sector we are looking forward to working with Bupa on this new extension, which will offer a host of new facilities to the local community."
