Copper Hill care home improves services through government partnership

Government Minister, Stephen Timms, will join residents and staff at Bupa’s Copper Hill care home in Leeds to launch a pioneering new training initiative.

The Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform, will visit Copper Hill care home in Church Street, Hunslet, on Monday 30 June to sign a Local Employment Partnership (LEP) between the care home and Jobcentre Plus in South Leeds.

LEPs are a new collaboration between the Government’s Jobcentre Plus and businesses to help the long-term unemployed get back into work. The two-week training course on ‘pre-employment’ includes guidance on interviews, mentoring, on the job training and work trials and guarantees an interview on completion.

Verity Taylor, home manager of Copper Hill Nursing Home, explains why her team is joining the initiative: “Getting the best calibre employees is crucial to providing high quality care for our residents. We worked closely with Jobcentre Plus to define our business and recruitment needs and they came up with a tailored partnership that delivers the best results for everyone involved.

“It means that in the future our new employees will come to us with the right skills and a realistic expectation of their role while residents will get the benefits of well-motivated staff who have structured aims of how to develop their skills.” Rohina Begum and Salma Begum from Beeston in Leeds underwent training for jobs as care assistants and have high praise for the partnership.

“We had great support from Bupa and the team at Jobcentre Plus,” said Salma. “They gave practical advice and skills on the qualifications needed to work in a care home, as well as mandatory training in areas such as health and safety.” Stephen Timms will join Ian Hunter and Michala Larkin from South Leeds Jobcentre Plus to meet the successful candidates and tour the care home.

Copper Hill is the second Bupa care home in Leeds to sign up to the partnership. West Ridings Residential and Nursing Home in Wakefield joined the scheme in May this year.
