Visitor to Bupa Garden wins golden opportunity
22 October 2008
"I literally struck gold with my prize!" said Rose Norris, winner of Bupa’s gardening competition which ran at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
In its first time at the world’s premier flower show, Bupa achieved a gold award for its garden, which showcases the organisation’s promise to celebrate individuality and recognises the needs of those with dementia. The garden also won the RHS/BBC People’s Choice Award at the show.
As a keen gardener, Rose from Bexleyheath in Kent, is an annual visitor to the Chelsea Flower Show and jumped at the chance to win a day’s advice from Cleve West, designer of the Bupa Garden and winner of five RHS medals.
Rose remembered: "The Bupa Garden was not only lovely to look at, but it was practical and stimulating and I thought it would be great to get advice on how to bring all those elements into my own garden."
When Cleve West arrived at Rose’s garden, he was presented with a challenge. "The garden was a very odd shape," said Cleve. "It wraps around the house like a big arm, so it was interesting to see how to make the best use of space."
The man with the Midas touch, Cleve West, soon discovered that the family enjoy holidays to Spain and wanted to capture a "Mediterranean feeling" in the design and that Mrs Norris’ husband liked to tend the lawn. Through a 3D computer image, Cleve was able to show how the new garden might look.
"It was great to instantly see Cleve’s suggestions," said Rose. "There was a gravel garden where we could plant herbs and create a Continental look and a traditional English garden with a lawn and flower borders – a clever ‘his n hers’ compromise!"
Cleve added: "Gardens provide stimulus and solace so I used the same sensory principles as I had when designing Bupa’s garden – blending together colour, texture and scent to create the best possible environment for its users."
When asked if she were ready to put Cleve’s advice into practice, Rose replied: "Absolutely!" She continued: "It’s a luxury to be able to tap into the expertise of someone like Cleve so it won’t go to waste. Perhaps he can come back in a years’ time and see if my efforts are award-winning too!"
The award-winning garden is currently being transferred to Bupa’s Meadbank Nursing Centre in Battersea in South-West London.
