Care workers walk to Moscow to keep fit

21 October 2005

During the last thirty days a team of four employees from Bupa’s Premier Court Residential and Nursing Home, Bishop’s Stortford, has walked 1,729 miles to get fit.

Rebecca Vincent, Simon Fleming, Magdalena Patuk and Evelyn Trevett walked three and a half million steps between them during the four-week event. They were up against 1800 other Bupa staff members from the UK, Spain, America, Australia, and Saudi Arabia who took part in the 2005 Bupa Walking Challenge.

"We really enjoyed competing with our colleagues from around the world, once you get into the pattern of walking that little bit extra it is easy to keep increasing your daily walking distance. The distance our team walked would have taken us from London to Moscow," said Simon Fleming, winning team member and chef at Premier Court.

The 2005 Walking Challenge saw 450 teams clip on their pedometers and go head-to-head, fiercely trying to out-step each other over a month. The challenge helped to encourage people to be more active in their daily lives and increase awareness of the benefits of regular exercise.

Dr Annabel Bentley, Bupa’s assistant medical director, says: "At Bupa we encourage everybody to take an active interest in their health. Walking has many health benefits and is safe, easy and cheap. Making small lifestyle changes, such as taking the stairs rather than the lift, and walking to the station rather than sitting in the car, can make a significant difference to people’s health and wellbeing."
