'The Archers' favourite to open new Bupa care home in Thatcham
19 September 2008
‘The Archers’ favourite, Arnold Peters will officially open Bupa’s new £5 million specialist dementia care home in Thatcham, on Tuesday 23 September, alongside the chief executive of Bupa, Ray King.
Arnold is giving his support to the new home, called Thatcham Court, because dementia is an issue close to his heart, having played the character of Jack in BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Archers’ for many years, who has recently been diagnosed with dementia.
To mark the official opening of Thatcham Court, Arnold will join Bupa’s chief executive Ray King to unveil a specially chosen painting by local artist Sarah Moorcroft, to be displayed in the lounge area of the home. They will then join residents, relatives and staff for a champagne reception and live jazz band to celebrate the official opening of the purpose-built, 60-bed care home.
Bupa is also planning to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society at the event with guests being offered the opportunity to win prizes on the day by taking part in a fundraising raffle for the charity.
Ray King, chief executive at Bupa, commented: “Thatcham Court represents the very best in dementia care and demonstrates Bupa’s commitment to having excellent standards of care for older people. I am proud to be opening the home and welcoming residents and their families.”
Arnold Peters said: “I am delighted to be helping to open Thatcham Court. The home is beautiful and welcoming and provides much needed dementia care facilities for older people in the local area.”
Thatcham Court is part of Bupa’s multi-million pound investment to improve the standards of dementia care for older people in the UK. Many of the home’s features have been designed to aid residents’ recollection. A range of ‘memory triggers’ have been incorporated to stimulate residents’ memories. Vibrant colours, eye-catching pictures and bright floral prints help stimulate and relax residents, while ‘memory boxes’ have been fitted outside each bedroom to be filled with residents personal items such as photographs, certificates and trinkets that may help them reminisce.
Sue Smith, home manager of Thatcham Court said: “We are thrilled to be celebrating the official opening of Thatcham Court, and are privileged to be joined by Ray King and Arnold Peters. We also encourage members of the local community to come along to mark the occasion and join in the celebrations.”
Thatcham Court has 60 bedrooms each with en-suite facilities. The home is set over three floors, each has a dining room and a lounge where residents can relax and entertain guests. Residents can benefit from a number of unique services such as the staff’s specialist dementia care training and the homes own hair salon.
