Bupa makes board level appointments

15 April 2008

Bupa has appointed Tom Singer as finance director and a main board member and Professor Ed Byrne AO as a non-executive director, both with effect from next month.

Mr Singer succeeds Ray King who becomes chief executive at the company’s Annual General Meeting on 15 May following the retirement of Val Gooding.

Mr Singer was previously chief operating officer at William Hill, a role to which he was appointed after four years as finance director. Prior to that he was finance director and main board director at Moss Bros Plc and has held managerial posts at McKinsey and Price Waterhouse. He is 44.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining a business which has achieved such considerable success in recent years. It has an enviable track record in organic growth and strategic acquisition. I look forward to playing a constructive part in its future expansion.”

Professor Byrne AO is executive dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences University College, London and head of the Royal Free and University College Medical School. He is a former dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, Melbourne and is a current member of its Advisory Board. He has held a number of posts in commercial, academic and research organisations in Australia, where Bupa has significant business interests.

Lord Leitch, Bupa’s chairman, said: “We are very fortunate to have attracted two individuals with such strong credentials. Tom has an impressive financial and senior management background and Ed brings considerable medical, academic and commercial experience in the UK and Australia. Both will add considerably to the board’s knowledge and experience. We look forward to welcoming them.”
