Bupa Wellness wins contracts to look after the workplace health of 37,000 rail workers

13 October 2005

Bupa Wellness has further secured its position as the leading provider of occupational health services to the railway industry with three new contracts with Metronet Rail, Network Rail and Thameslink. The new contracts give Bupa Wellness responsibility for the workplace health of over 37,000 rail workers.

Bupa Wellness will initially work with Metronet, which is maintaining and upgrading two-thirds of the Underground network, for two years. Bupa will provide a full occupational health service including track safety assessments, drug and alcohol screening and sickness absence management, as well as offering information on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The company will also provide musculo-skeletal services, which looks specifically at conditions like joint and back pain.

In the wake of the London bombings, Bupa Wellness professionals provided extensive counselling services for members of Metronet’s workforce affected by events.

Network Rail has a huge workforce, including 15,000 people involved in the maintenance of the UK’s rail infrastructure and 8,000 people working in safety critical functions such as signallers and crossing keepers.

In a new contract, Bupa Wellness will provide Network Rail with services including sickness absence management, face-to-face re-assessments of pre-employment and routine track safety assessments.

Bupa Wellness also provides a full occupational health service to train operator Thameslink which includes all workers involved in safety critical work, as well as supporting the company in sickness absence management.

Jenny Leeser, Bupa Wellness clinical director commented on the three new rail contracts: "Bupa is very proud of its credentials within the rail industry and we are absolutely delighted to be working with Metronet, Network Rail and Thameslink. We believe our rail occupational health services are second to none and we look forward to proving that with these new contracts."

Rachel Compton, Thameslink employee relations manager, said: "Since moving to Bupa, Thameslink have been able to manage sickness absence more effectively, especially long term cases. Bupa has made a real difference with regular contract reviews and more importantly case conferences where we sit down with the line manager to discuss individual cases."

Metronet’s senior vice president of human resources, Nigel Hague, said: "Our contract with Bupa will benefit both staff and company, ensuring the welfare of our employees and the continued safe operation of the Underground as we continue to implement the world’s largest metro regeneration programme."
