Time capsule marks the beginnings of new Southampton care home

11 August 2008

A time capsule will be buried in Southampton this week, to mark the site where a brand new care home, Oak Lodge, will soon be taking shape.

Construction work on the Bupa-owned Oak Lodge care home will begin on Wednesday 13 August, when Councillor Ivan White will turn the soil on the site before burying a time capsule which will be reopened in 50 years.

The capsule will contain articles chosen by residents from Wilton Manor, which is another Bupa care home in the area. These include a copy of ‘Bupa Today’ (dated 25 July 2008), a list of current residents staying at Wilton Manor and a newspaper cutting on the eye hospital which previously stood at Wilton Manor, amongst other memorabilia.

Bupa’s UK director of business development, Lyth Watson, said: “We believe that Oak Lodge will be a great example of our commitment to improving facilities for older people and are pleased to be working together with Southampton City Council on the development of this home. The time capsule is an excellent way to mark the occasion and celebrate the beginning of Oak Lodge.”

Oak Lodge will cost an estimated £5.7 million to build and will provide specialist dementia care for older people in Southampton. The home will be built to a high specification design and construction, with 71 single en suite rooms and a day centre for local older people.

Bupa is committed to providing personalised care to every resident. Each person living in a Bupa care home has their own personal plan that is unique to them. Residents and relatives are asked to complete a map of life so that employees can get to know each residents and meet their emotional and social as well as physical needs.

Bupa has agreed a partnership contract with Southampton City Council, whereby the council will manage the day centre which has places for up to 15 people. The agreement will also mean that 40 of Oak Lodge’s beds will be made available to the council for residents funded by the local authority.

Speaking about the partnership, Sue Greenwood, regional manager for Bupa Care Homes, said: “The number of people in the UK with forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, is rising rapidly, but there is a real lack of specialist facilities to care for them. This is why Bupa is investing millions of pounds each year into building new care homes and redeveloping existing ones, to help improve the standards of care for older people.”

Bupa are investing circa £60m this year in new builds, extensions and refurbishments with a large percentage of the spend being focused on the provision of dementia care.

Oak Lodge will be completed in Winter 2009.
