Care homes residents give Mornington Hall a £250,000 new look

11 August 2008

London care home Mornington Hall has had a refurbishment with a difference, putting its interior decorating in the hands of its 120 residents and providing a £250,000 spending allowance.

As part of a major refurbishment programme by Bupa, residents from the home worked with staff to improve facilities at the home whilst being able to add their own personal touches.

Home manager Michalae Thompson said: “Everyone within the home has been able to participate in the designing of their rooms which has given them the chance to express their individuality. It’s been so enjoyable to see the positive effect that’s had, as it makes all the difference for the residents by making them as comfortable as possible during their stay.”

Residents were able to assist staff in choosing everything from paint colours and carpets to the brand new lounge and dining room furniture.

No room was left untouched in Mornington Hall, with each lounge, corridor, bathroom and bedroom all being updated to meet a variety of resident needs. All corridors were painted and each bedroom received new carpets, furniture, bed spread, curtains and lampshades. A Malibu bath was installed in each en suite room, allowing residents to easily access the bath using an electric seat and hoist. Dignity curtains around the bathroom door were also fitted so that even in the bath, residents can communicate with their carer easily, when necessary.

Mornington Hall caters for a variety of resident needs, providing a combination of nursing and care to its residents. All refurbishments were considered with these needs in mind, from the colour of the walls to appropriate flooring, to ensure that each individual is as comfortable as possible throughout their stay. The home’s communal lounges even received flat screen televisions for everyone to enjoy!
