Bupa celebrates Ofsted report following £3 million investment in staff
11 August 2008
A new report from education inspectors Ofsted showed that Bupa staff had an outstanding 93 percent success rate on the Skills for Life examinations whilst those who undertook levels two or three of the Health and Social Care NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) had success rates of over 80 percent.
Last year, more than 400 carers undertook the "Skills for Life" programme as part of Bupa Care Services’ £3 million investment in staff training and development. The programme enables staff to improve their literacy and numeracy skills, not just for the job they do but also in every day life.
A further 725 carers studied for the Health and Social Care NVQ, covering units on health and safety, communication, supporting individuals with their personal care needs, moving and handling and the care, protection and well-being of individuals. Carers who trained to level 3 also received specialist training for the challenge of supporting individuals through the process of dying.
The Ofsted report acknowledged the wide range of training Bupa provides for its care home staff which continually improves the quality of resident care through providing not only relevant qualifications but also practical workshops to ensure they are trained to a high standard.
People Development Manager for Bupa Care Services, Ceri Travers, said: "Our first ever Ofsted results were very encouraging. It’s wonderful to be able to offer our staff extra qualifications so they can develop their skills.
"We continually invest in our staff and as a result we have contributed to a decrease in staff turnover, improved staff engagement and resident satisfaction."
One Bupa care worker who has been officially recognised for her personal dedication to the care home industry is Michelle Hooper, who recently won the Learning and Skills Council’s Apprentice of the Year South East award. Michelle, 21, competed against 300 workers from other vocations to win the award and is now going on to study a nursing degree at Southampton University.
Ofsted also acknowledged Bupa’s investment in personal and professional development which demonstrated very good support for learners in the workplace and good strategic planning and leadership. The report also noted that Bupa had developed and maintained a strong, professional relationship with external training partner NVQUK throughout all NVQ and apprenticeship programmes.
BUPA Care Homes Personal Best programme encourages carers to provide a truly individual service and won the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development annual People Management Award in 2006. Bupa was also awarded the Investor in People quality standard for the third time in 2006.
Last month Bupa Care Services signed a Local Employment Partnership (LEP) with the Government to help thousands of long-term unemployed people to get back into work. The collaboration between the Government’s Jobcentre Plus and Bupa helps people on benefits to find new jobs by offering individuals a two-week "pre-employment" training course that includes on-the-job training, supervised work trials and a guaranteed interview on completion of the course.
