Medical help at a time and place to suit you
07 September 2007
From emergency airlifts out of jungle territory to 24/7 general medical advice, Bupa International's newly launched worldwide medical assistance team have got it covered.
The team, based in Copenhagen, handle all evacuation and repatriation requests, and answer general medical advice queries - via 'healthline' - for Bupa International's individual and small company members around the world. In short, they offer a very personal and high level of medical expertise, support and service 24/7.
Healthline gives members access to advice from medical professionals as well as providing travel information and help locating embassies and hospitals whilst abroad.
Meanwhile, evacuation cover has proven to be invaluable when it comes to working or living abroad. For example, a couple's dream holiday turned into a nightmare when they were badly injured in a motorcycle accident in Vietnam and had to be flown to a private hospital in Bangkok for life-saving treatment. Another Bupa International member was attacked by an elephant in Africa, flown to Nairobi National Hospital where surgeons saved her life and was then evacuated back to the UK for further emergency treatment, all arranged and funded by Bupa International.
With hundreds of medical evacuations and repatriations arranged a year and 1,000 healthline calls taken a month, the importance of the team's role at Bupa International, the world's largest expat health insurer, is crucial.
Dr Torben Stæhr Johansen, Bupa International, said: "When you're living and working abroad, it's so important to have the peace of mind in knowing that the best healthcare is on hand. Access to Bupa's medical professionals and evacuation services 24/7 is therefore vital and potentially life-saving.
"Bupa International also offers its members advice on specific health concerns related to the country in which they live. It also provides access to multi-lingual health advisers who can give advice about local healthcare facilities in every region of the world."
