‘Operation pig-sty’ takes Heathrow by storm
Two resident pigs at Heathrow Special Needs Farm in Longford can now look forward to a new and improved pig-sty, thanks to a team of business high-flyers from Bupa, who are giving up their time on Thursday 10 July to make a difference in their local community.
“Operation pig-sty”, as the day has been suitably called, will be taking place at the Heathrow–based farm, which attracts both children and adults with special needs. The farm aims to engage visitors by offering them a full sensory experience as well as encouraging interaction with the farm animals.
The challenge for the volunteers from Bupa’s UK Health Insurance sales team, based in Staines, is to re-position the sty so that visitors can see the pigs more clearly and access multiple sides of the pen. The pigs will also be treated to a new mud wallow and an extended area for them to play.
A number of other activities will also take place throughout the day, such as the re-positioning of animal boundary fences, as well as other farmyard tasks.
Claudia Zanini, who is heading up Bupa’s volunteers on the day, said, "Everyone from our sales team is really looking forward to helping Longford Farm, for what will no doubt be a very muddy day! It’s great to give something back to the local community in which many of us live and work."
Ken Tinslay, secretary at Heathrow Special Needs Farm, said, "We are really grateful to the employees from Bupa for giving up their time to come to the farm on Thursday and for organising such a productive day. It’s great that the pigs will have a new and improved area, which will help our visitors engage with the pigs more easily."
This activity day forms part of Bupa’s corporate social responsibility programme of initiatives, which focuses on providing help and support to the local communities in which Bupa employees live and work. This team challenge was made possible with the help of Runnymede Association of Voluntary Services (RAVS).
