Bupa North Cheshire Hospital sweeps to top spot in Bupa hospital cleanliness survey

2 July 2007

Ninety-seven percent of patients rank standards of cleanliness at Bupa North Cheshire Hospital in Warrington as "excellent" or "very good". The hospital got the highest rating for cleanliness among Bupa hospitals in a patient satisfaction survey.

"Teamwork across the hospital is key to this achievement," said Jayne Mackay, hotel services lead at Bupa North Cheshire. "The housekeeping and nursing departments work together closely to ensure the hospital is kept clean and hygienic, providing the right setting for good patient care. It's a responsibility we all share."

Jayne meets with the nursing team each day to plan thorough cleaning of rooms around discharge and admission times for patients. This will include any special cleaning requirements. Jayne said: "Our housekeepers see patients every day when they go into their rooms to clean them and build a good rapport with them. That frequent contact means they are well-placed to discover any concerns patients may have and ensure those are acted upon."

As part of this joint approach housekeeper June Egerton is a member of the hospital's infection control team. She discusses issues raised by her colleagues, including effective cleaning procedures and queries about protecting patients and staff against infection.

Janet Bradshaw, Bupa North Cheshire infection control lead, said: "The housekeeping team are my eyes and ears in the hospital, passing on any patient niggles so they can be sorted out quickly."

The hospital also received the highest satisfaction rating, in relation to its peers, with regards to the quality of food it serves. Eighty-four percent of patients at Bupa North Cheshire said the food was "excellent" or "very good".

This strive for excellence at the hospital was further underlined when it received a five star rating for hygiene in a recent local council environmental health check of the kitchens.

Jayne said: "This score is again a reflection of our commitment to give patients what they want. Every morning I visit each patient to check what they would like for lunch. Later in the day one of our chefs will go and see the patient to find out their evening meal requirements. We actively seek their feedback and go out of our way cater for specific dietary needs and tastes."
