Local MP to unveil sensory garden at Oakhill house
Residents and staff at Bupa’s Oakhill House Nursing Home in Horsham are getting set to welcome their local MP, Francis Maude, who will unveil the home’s new sensory garden on Friday 6 June.
The new garden has been designed particularly for those at the home with forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, and has been has been supported by a £1,500 grant from local government and the Department of Health.
To mark his visit, Mr Maude will plant a Japanese Aralia in the new garden, which is one of over 250 sensory gardens Bupa has developed in its care homes across the UK, as a place of stimulus for older people, including those with dementia, as well as a place of calm and sanctuary.
Mr Maude commented: “Dementia is a rising issue that we all need to be aware of. I was shocked to learn that by 2021 it is predicted that there will be over 16,500 people living with dementia in West Sussex alone – that is nearly 8% of the population aged over 65. I am very pleased to be visiting Oakhill House and to be seeing how care homes can help those with dementia.”
Oakhill House manager, Jane Marquis said:”It means a lot to residents and staff that our local MP has taken the time out to visit our home and launch our new sensory garden. At Oakhill House we are very proud of the care we provide our residents and the work we do to help those with dementia."
