Expats rate financial advice above help finding schooling for children

01 August 2005

Of the 1.5 million people thinking of moving abroad next year, those who’ve made the move already can offer them some useful advice. New research from Bupa International, the largest expatriate health insurer in the world, shows that expats consider advice on managing their finances more valuable than help finding schooling for their children when relocating to a new country.

Help arranging finances topped their list of priorities, with over three quarters of expats considering it fairly or very valuable. General advice about moving abroad and information about local healthcare followed closely behind with over half the expats surveyed citing them as important. Only around a third of expats rated help finding schooling of value.

Keith Biddlestone, managing director of Bupa International said: "There is so much to think about when you’re moving abroad. Not only do you need to consider practical arrangements such as learning the language and finding accommodation, but you also need to plan how you will support yourself and what you will do if there’s a medical emergency. It can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it’s important that you arrange everything properly before you go to ensure that everything goes smoothly when you arrive."

Bupa International gives help and advice to nearly 300,000 expats in 190 different countries. All customers receive access to MembersWorld, a secure website which helps them manage their finances by enabling them to view their policy details online, check their balance, find out when their next payment is due and track claims progress, all at the click of a button.

Bupa International also supports its customers by providing advice about local healthcare arrangements. All customers receive Healthline as a standard benefit of their cover. Healthline offers instant access by telephone to a team of health professionals who can provide advice and information about local medical facilities around the world, inoculation and visa requirements, medical referrals for treatment and referrals for legal assistance or local embassy and consulate advice. It is available to 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from anywhere in the world.
